In addition to oral hygiene practices performed at home, our Washington, MI, dentist recommends that you visit our office to receive a professional dental cleaning every six months. During this appointment, we’ll carefully remove left behind , polish each tooth, and finish with a flossing session.
Components of a Dental Cleaning
A thorough teeth cleaning is straightforward, relatively quick, and should not cause you any pain. However, if you suffer from dental anxiety, please let our staff know and we can discuss temporary sedation, such as laughing gas, with you.
The stages of a routine cleaning include:
- Physical exam of your entire mouth (teeth, gums, jaw)
- Removal of plaque and hardened tartar
- Polishing of teeth with high-powered electric brush
- In-depth flossing
- Optional fluoride treatment
During the second stage, one of our hygienists will use a tool called a scaler to get rid of plaque that is located in between your teeth as well as around your gum line. It’s perfectly normal to hear scraping noises at this time as hardened tartar requires more work to remove. If you’d prefer less scraping, be sure to brush more thoroughly at home.
Following plaque and tartar removal, our hygienist will switch to a high-powered electric brush that, in combination with a gritty toothpaste, is designed to quickly deep clean teeth and catch any leftover tartar.
Flossing right after teeth have been polished will help us to identify any problem areas, such as those that bleed easily, and remove any toothpaste still present.
